Where Train45 Saves on Windows

Train45 follows the standard Godot Engine save convention on Windows. Save files live under your user profile, not inside the Steam install folder. The full default path is:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\TrainNumber45\

That folder is created the first time you launch the game and reach a chapter checkpoint. Inside you will find a small set of .save files plus optional metadata. The folder name is TrainNumber45 (with a capital N and the literal word “Number”), not Train45 or Train_45. The game does not write anything to Documents or the Steam userdata folder.

Each save holds the current chapter, affinity with the five companions (Reina, Mai, Konial, Pazuzu, Butler), route flags set by dialogue choices, key-item inventory, and unlocked anomalies. Cloud anomalies and Event Gallery unlocks are stored separately and do not move when you copy a save file manually.

Steam Cloud Sync Across Devices

Steam Cloud is enabled by default for Train45. After every checkpoint, the client uploads the local TrainNumber45 folder to your Steam account and downloads it again on any other machine where you sign in. Your progress follows you from desktop to laptop to Steam Deck without lifting a finger.

Cloud quota for Train45 is generous — the configuration in Steamworks reserves roughly 9.31 GiB total, with 10,000 files allowed. You will never hit the limit on a single-player visual novel, even with manual backups alongside your normal saves.

To verify Cloud is active, open your Steam Library, right-click Train45, choose Properties → General → Steam Cloud and confirm the toggle is enabled. A “Synchronizing” message appears briefly in the bottom-right corner of the client whenever a checkpoint syncs.

Cloud sync runs only when Steam itself is online. If you play offline for a long stretch, your latest saves still live locally and upload on the next connection.

Backing Up Saves Before a Risky Run

Manual backups matter most before three situations: starting a True Ending attempt, choosing between Konial's Memo and Xiao Ke OMEGA, or going after a Bad Ending you do not want to keep as your permanent save. The game only writes when you reach a checkpoint, so you can copy files between chapters safely.

1. Quit Train45 from the title screen or pause menu — do not leave it running in the background.
2. Open %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\TrainNumber45\ in File Explorer.
3. Copy the entire folder to a safe location: a USB stick, a Documents\Train45-Backups folder, or a cloud drive.
4. Rename the copy with the date and the route you are saving — e.g. TrainNumber45-2026-08-26-Reina-routeA.

If a route goes wrong, quit the game, replace the TrainNumber45 folder with your backup copy, and relaunch. Steam Cloud will detect the older timestamp and ask which version to keep — choose Upload to Steam Cloud so the backup also overwrites the cloud copy.

Steam Deck Save Management

v1.0.5.1 marked Train45 as Steam Deck Verified, so saves work the same way as on desktop. The Deck stores files under the Linux equivalent path:

~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/3711590/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/TrainNumber45/

Steam Cloud keeps the Deck and any Windows machine synchronized automatically. You can keep a true-ending run on the Deck and continue from a desktop with no extra setup. If you want to swap saves between devices manually, suspend the game first, copy the folder via Desktop Mode, then resume.

Common Save File Issues

• “Save data corrupted” on launch: This usually appears after a hard crash during an H-scene dialogue transition. Quit fully, then delete only the most recent .save file in the TrainNumber45 folder. The game keeps an automatic checkpoint two chapters back, so you will lose progress but not the whole save.
• Cloud keeps overwriting a “good” local save with an older cloud copy: Disable Steam Cloud temporarily, restore your backup to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\TrainNumber45\, launch the game to force a fresh upload, then re-enable Cloud.
• Achievements not unlocking after a stolen save: Steam does not grant achievements for save files that look teleported. Play the chapter legitimately at least once on that account — even a quick Car 1 walkthrough counts.
• Lost-and-Found Center achievement bug (fixed in Hotfix 2): Pre-launch saves did not unlock this achievement when collecting the final lost item. If you started a save before 27 June 2026, replay the lost-item chain on v1.0.4.3 or later.

Avoid “100% save” downloads from fan sites. They rarely match v1.0.5.1 game state, can be flagged by Steam anti-cheat, and break achievement integrity. Your own backup is always safer.
